Money Savvy News: Nutella Class Action Lawsuit – Should Deceptive Advertising be Punished or Should We Just Know Better?

Nutella class action lawsuit

If you thought the Nutella advertising touting the product as being healthy and nutritional was a bit exaggerated, you apparently weren’t the only one!  Who knew that common candy bar ingredients wouldn’t make up a healthy meal, right? ;)

In fact, if you purchased Nutella in California from 8/1/2009 – 1/23/2012 or in any other state between 1/1/2008 – 2/3/12 you are entitled to claim part of the settlement in the recent Nutella class action lawsuit.  You can claim up to 5 jars purchased in the previous time frames at up to $4 per jar (the value may be lower according to the number of claims) for up to $20 total.  Head over to the Nutella Consumer Class Action Settlements site to file your claim or get more information.

Are you going to claim because you agree the ads were deceptive?  Or do you think it’s a ridiculous case and people should know better – or at least pay a little more attention to labels?

  1. Nutella is delicious but this lawsuit is ridiculous!

  2. I think it’s delicious, but I never once believed the claim that it was healthy!

  3. Sandra Abel says:

    P.S. Nutella makes great fudge!

  4. jenniferlthomas says:

Must’ve been in the same court as the walnut class action suit. Crazy stuff.

  5. Sandra Abel says:

I find this absolutely ridiculous. While they shouldn’t claim it’s healthy if it’s not, it’s still up to the end-user to read the damn label. I buy nothing in a can, jar, or bottle without looking at what’s in it. What your family puts in their body is ultimately up to who is doing the shopping. This lawsuit is just another group of greedy people finding a flimsy reason to sue over something that show’s their stupidity. Sorry but I think the courts should be reserved for more important matters, like child abductors and murderers.

  6. That’s crazy! I love Nutella! As for being healthy, everybody knows it’s not! While making false claims should be taken seriously, so should being responsible for oneself and having a bit of common sense (which apparently, a lot of people lack) lol! Great post!!! :)

I tend to agree with you, Krista. I do think the lawsuit is a bit ridiculous because people should be paying attention to what they buy. However, deceptive advertising is a very real issue that should not be allowed to pass just because we should know better in my opinion. :)

  7. Interesting! My kids love Nutella and while I don’t really look at it as Healthy, I do see it as somewhat more nutritious than a candy bar…

  8. I think that we should all be responsible for reading labels and determining whether or not a product/food is healthy. With that being said, I LOVE Nutella but I know it’s not the “healthiest”

  9. i think people should know that it was not the healthiest thing.

  10. Christina S. says:

Really?? Any person with half a brain knows its not the healthiest thing on the planet, although it is divinely delicious. This is taking advantage of a company and just plain wrong in my book.
