How to Make Bacon Hearts
Odds are that if you eat pork, you love bacon, right? Even turkey bacon is pretty good these days for those opting for a healthier option. One of my favorite things to do on Valentine’s Day is to make a special breakfast for the boyfriend. Trying to think of ways to make breakfast sweet and romantic while still using some of the boyfriends favorite breakfast foods, I settled on bacon hearts as being the perfect item.
So, how does one make bacon hearts? The process is fairy easy – at the very least you need a baking, bacon, preferably thick cut, and an oven. I also suggest using foil and a rack just to make clean up easier. You know me, I’m all about easy clean up since unfortunately one of my Valentine’s Day gifts will not be the gift of not having to do dishes.
If you’ve never baked your bacon before, I think you’re in for a treat. After discovering the awesomeness that is oven baked bacon, I very rarely cook it in a skillet anymore unless it’s for something like country green beans or colcannon. By baking the bacon, it seems to cook more evenly, shrink less and, more importantly, not splatter all over your stove and having you dance around the kitchen while making the rest of breakfast. While it may be good exercise, I don’t know about you, but that’s not my idea of cardio first thing in the morning.
Moving on, here are the easy steps to get your bacon hearts put together. However, be sure to check back tomorrow. If you read my candied bacon footballs post, you know I love being crazy with bacon and even took these bacon hearts to the next level.
These bacon hearts are great to serve on Valentine's Day, anniversaries, birthdays or any morning you wish to make a special occasion and show your love!
Ingredients
Bacon, 1 strip per heart and preferably thick cut
Instructions
- Pre-heat oven to 375°F.
- If desired for easy clean up, line baking sheet with foil and place an oven-safe rack on top. Otherwise your hearts will turn out just fine baked right on the baking sheet.
- Cut bacon strips in half.
- Place 2 half strips of bacon onto baking sheet and form into a heart shape. I had the best luck by using one strip as the "bottom", placing one end as the bottom of the heart at an angle, then curling the other end onto itself. I then placed one end of the "top" half-strip of bacon onto the top of "bottom" bacon strip curving the top end onto itself as before, leaving the two curved portions touching.
- Bake at 375°F for 15-30 minutes depending on thickness of bacon and how crisp you like your bacon. If your oven has hot spots, you may want to rotate the pan halfway through. I also like to check the oven after about 5-10 minutes and make sure the tops of the bacon slices are still touching as heart. Sometimes no matter how well you shaped them, they'll shrink apart. If this happens, I reform the heart shape and then place a metal knife on this top section of the heart so that they will continue baking together.
- Once baked to desired doneness, remove from oven and cool slightly.
- Serve to your sweetie and/or kids and enjoy!
Notes
You can also take these to the next level by making candied bacon hearts that you can even dip in chocolate. Check back tomorrow for the recipe!
