Chocolate Dipped Candied Bacon Hearts
Yesterday I posted a tutorial for How to Make Bacon Hearts for your sweetie or kids on Valentine’s Day (or any other occasion you might want to make something special for). However, since the theme was for Valentine’s Day, and the fact I like to go a bit outside the box, or extreme as the case may be, with matching flavors, I thought what the heck, why not incorporate some chocolate? So, yes, after the awesomeness that were the Candied Bacon Footballs, I now also bring you Chocolate Dipped Candied Bacon Hearts.
Now, if you wanted to just use regular bacon that you don’t candy first, that is fine. I like to use a semi-sweet or white chocolate for the dipping, so I find that the candying adds just a bit of sweetness to go well with the savory and salt. Plus, what’s not to love about brown sugar or maple syrup, right?
Either way, this recipe is pretty flexible as far as using flavors that you prefer. Milk, dark, semi-sweet or even white chocolate would all be great to use. I actually dipped some in semi-sweet and others in white chocolate and we loved both. If you do candy and would like to add a bit of spice as well, you can add in a pinch of black or cayenne pepper to the brown sugar or syrup before putting it on the bacon. Lastly, if you want to make it look really festive, just sprinkle on some colored sugar or sprinkles before the chocolate completely hardens. I put some red sugar on the chocolate dipped portion and thought it made the bacon candies just look all the more Valentine’s Day worthy, and it didn’t really add much more sweetness.
As for the overall taste? Honestly, I wasn’t too sure about bacon and chocolate going together. I have to say, though, that it’s a great combo of sweet, salty and savory that I look forward to indulging in now and then!
Looking for something special yet different this Valentine's Day? These yummy chocolate dipped candied bacon hearts are the perfect solution!
Ingredients
Bacon, 1 strip per heart that is preferably thick cut
Brown sugar or maple syrup
Chocolate (dark, milk, semi-sweet or white varieties will all work)
Colored sugars or sprinkles (optional)
Instructions
- Pre-heat oven to 375°F.
- If desired, line baking sheet with foil and place oven-safe rack on top. Otherwise baking directly on the pan is fine, clean up will just not be fun. ;)
- Cut bacon strips in half.
- Shape bacon into hearts. See my How to Make Bacon Hearts tutorial if you need help.
- Sprinkle bacon with brown sugar (about 1 Tablespoon per heart) or brush with maple syrup. I have always used brown sugar.
- Bake for 15-30 minutes depending on thickness and how crisp you want your bacon. We normally don't like super crisp bacon, but I think it is best crisp when paired with chocolate.
- Once baked to desired doneness, remove from oven and allow to cool slightly, placing on paper towels to drain excess grease if needed.
- In the mean time, start melting your chocolate over low heat, in a double boiler or in the microwave.
- Once chocolate is melted, dip half (or the whole thing if you really want) of the heart into the chocolate, allowing excess chocolate to drip off.
- Place on parchment paper to harden, sprinkling with colored sugar or sprinkles before chocolate hardens, if desired.
- Eat and enjoy. If you have leftovers, they may be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days, but I find the bacon is best consumed the day you make it.
Notes
Want to spice things up a bit? Add some black or cayenne pepper to the brown sugar or maple syrup before applying it to the bacon.

I just think this bacon crazy is so funny…yet I’m a bacon lover. lol I love bacon and peanut butter so why not chocolate!
Who knows – you may be on to something with the peanut butter. I think that might be a bit too much for even me to try though, haha.
Is the chocolate green-colored? If not, the color is way off. Great idea, though – thanks!!!
Hi, Bethany. No, the chocolate was not green.
I unfortunately didn’t realize until too late that the lighting was way off. C’est la vie
What a neat idea. I never would have thought to add chocolate to bacon. Looks good though!
I thought the idea was crazy at first too, Ellen, and still kind of do actually. But it is really delish!
